In this era of coronavirus, the Wilking Sisters say that TikTok is a great platform to get across important information. They have posted videos on the importance of washing your hands, staying home and staying safe, as well as fun ways to DIY your own face masks.
“We feel being social media influencers is especially important during this time because we encourage people to interact with their families, get up and get active, and be safe, all while laughing and having a good time,” say the Wilking Sisters. “This is much needed during a time when the news is generally so heavy and deep. Additionally, being social media influencers gives us an opportunity to earn an income and promote products at a time when brands are feeling the financial crunch.”
The Wilking Sisters offer their tips for becoming a social media influencer.
Here, the Wilking Sisters off their top seven tips for how to become a social media influencer:
1. Be consistent. Post regularly, ideally on a schedule.
2. Don’t take it too seriously. Just have fun with it!
3. Use popular, trending songs.
4. Use trending hashtags on the discover page.
5. Engage with other creators to expand your audience.
6. Collaborate with other creators.
7. Ultimately, be yourself!
The Wilking Sisters’ passion to perform is not something they feel is work. They love their “jobs” every single day – performing, meeting people virtually, with inspiring others. This drives them to continue to develop their craft.
Miranda and Melanie Wilking’s desire to dance and perform began at a very young age. At ages 9 and 7, respectively, created their own dance camp in their backyard, teaching dance to little girls their age and younger. This camp became a yearly tradition that continued to grow each year and eventually was featured in local newspapers. They both signed with MTA, a California talent agency. As they grew older, they performed as back-up dancers for a local young singer, danced professionally for the Detroit Piston’s hip hop team, taught ballet technique to figure skaters as well as private dance lessons, appeared in national commercials, and choreographed and performed in numerous dance productions and charity events. By the time they reached high school, they were accepted into a performing arts school where they learned about theater, acting and singing.
Miranda Wilking followed her passion and moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school. She began performing with Radio Disney, the W Hotel, the vintage group the Satin Dollz, and teaching dance in Hollywood at the International Dance Academy. Melanie, too, moved to LA after one year. With the support of her high school community back home, she continued her studies on-line and ended up graduating a semester early with the highest honors. It wasn’t long before the sisters were working on almost all projects together.
The Wilking Sisters have been teaching dance since they were 9 and 7 years old.
The greatest reward for the Wilking Sisters, they say, is the smiles they see on the faces of their students and the other people they work with. They love how their followers have positive things to say about them. They are proud when people they work with tell them they are reliable, productive, professional and fun to be around. They feel another terrific reward is pursuing a career with each other, because they are best friends. People mistake them for twins every day.
One of the biggest obstacles they’ve faced in this career is moving away from their family and friends and being far from home. Their family has always been extremely close and supportive. It has been a challenge, but Miranda and Melanie Wilking talk with their parents daily and visit Michigan as often as they can.
The Wilking Sisters have a message for young people. They ask that you find something you love to do and are good at, and begin to learn as much as you can so that you can develop that passion into a career. Miranda and Melanie Wilking’s passion led to them to practice dance every day, which led to professional opportunities in their community, and eventually a full-blown career. “If you love something and dream of a future doing what you love, share your desires with the people around you,” they say. “What you talk about with others and what you do to develop your talents can lead you to opportunities you may not have ever imagined, like they did for us.”
